LEWISTON — The only time Lewiston and Edward Little hockey collided during the Eastern Class A regular season, the Blue Devils let the Red Eddies lurk and linger for two periods, long enough to dream of a Twin Cities miracle on ice.

So, let’s just say the Devils put out the no trespassing sign and professed no belief in the supernatural in Tuesday’s playoff rematch, shall we?

No. 1 Lewiston dominated the first period in every measurable and intangible facet, flooding the net with five goals and storming to a 9-1 quarterfinal rout of No. 8 EL at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Bryan Hall and Cam Marquis, two of the five seniors on Lewiston’s relatively fresh-faced roster, each scored two goals. Kyle Lemelin added a goal and numerous near-misses to his five assists.

Lewiston (15-3-1) won for the 12th time in its past 13 games.

Matt Poulin, Patrick DeBlois, Tanner Hubbard and Ethan Melvin rounded out the scoring parade for the Blue Devils, who will host No. 5 Brunswick in Saturday’s semifinals.

“It’s playoffs, and that’s a challenge we set for the kids right from the beginning,” Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau said. “We did that. We played well. Obviously the power play helped. We took a lot of shots. That being said, we’ve got to get better the next game. We’re going to have to get smarter, but it’s a good start.”

Shots in the opening period were 18-0. Two of Lewiston’s goals came on an extended power play after EL (4-13-2) was whistled for a boarding major. The Devils lit the lamp in the first minute of the period, the final minute, and at multiple points in between.

The second period was different only by the bottom line, with the Devils actually unleashing more shots (22) and inflating the lead to 8-1. Trevor Haley scored EL’s power play goal on its first shot of the game — 10:10 into the second period — by virtue of Lewiston’s lackadaisical attempt to clear the zone.

And from the it-could-have-been-worse department, Lewiston blasts rang a post on five different occasions through the first two periods.

“We needed to come out right away and take it to them, because in a really, really big game, that’s the key right there,” Lemelin said.

It was a far cry from the Feb. 6 gathering on the other side of Great Falls, when the Devils needed four third-period goals to secure a 6-1 triumph.

Hall had two goals and Lemelin landed a goal and three assists in the opening barrage.

“We definitely had lot of nervous players, especially with the way we started slowly last time,” Hall said. “We were hoping to come out firing and we did.”

Marquis got the Devils started at the 54-second mark. Devin Harrison’s wild shot from the point caught a piece of EL goalie Zach Gosselin (38 saves) as it sailed to the left boards.

Marquis flagged down the puck, skated back into the slot without resistance and scored with ease.

Lewiston scored again at 4:26 — Hall from Poulin and Lemelin — in a sequence that ripped open the game.

Hubbard scored after a delayed penalty call for the boarding. Lewiston coaches loudly contended that it should have been a game misconduct. The final verdict was five minutes without release from the penalty box.

Poulin and Lemelin each scored during the five-on-four. Hall made it 5-0 on a redirection with 59 seconds remaining in the period.

With the exception of EL’s attempts to ice the puck, essentially the entire first period was played in the Eddies’ defensive zone.

“You try to keep the other team down and hopefully the goals start to add up,” Hall said.

The second period was relatively merciful. DeBlois and Hubbard scored in a span of less than a minute. Lemelin logged his fifth point of the evening, setting up DeBlois’ goal along with Evan Gosselin.

Marquis’ second goal of the night made it 8-0 with 6:12 left, still with nary an EL shot against Lewiston goalie Evan Bourassa until Haley broke up the shutout.

“We definitely talked about not taking penalties, because just like that turnover, it can go sour after that,” Lemelin said.

Melvin tacked on a goal 10:09 into the third, Lemelin and Eddie Emerson assisting. The final shot count was 47-4.
