NAPERVILLE, Ill. — University of Southern Maine sophomore Kevin Desmond of Monmouth posted the seventh quickest time in the 800-meter trials Friday in the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Al B. Carius Track–Residence Hall/Recreation Center on the campus of North Central College.

Desmond cross the finish line in a time of one-minute, 53.04 seconds to place third in his heat race, and advances to the 800-meter finals on Saturday. Senior Jake Waterman of Wartburg College had the fastest time in trials crossing the line in 1:52.39.

Bates’ Pless shines

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — David Pless became the second seven-time All-American male athlete in Bates College’s history, as he took second place in the weight throw at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.

The Bobcats also saw senior James LePage and junior Tully Hannan reach Saturday’s finals in the 800 meters and the mile, respectively. Bates’ distance medley relay team placed ninth, one place shy of All-America status, and sophomore Sean Enos placed 11th in the weight throw.

Maine 4, New Hampshire 3

DURHAM, N.H. — Kyle Beattie scored a pair of goals as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team defeated fourth-ranked New Hampshire 4-3 on Friday night at the Whittemore Center.

With the victory, Maine clinched a berth in the 2013 Hockey East quarterfinals set for next weekend. Seeding for the tournament has yet to be finalized.

Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead at 8:45 of the first period with a short-handed goal. While killing a penalty, Devin Shore gained control of the puck. He broke into the offensive zone, but had three defenders on him. He saw Steven Swavely skating down the slot uncontested. Shore made a perfect pass and Swavely fired the puck into the back of the net. For Swavely, it was his sixth goal of the season.

Maine extended its lead to 2-0 at 9:18 of the third period. Jon Swavely had a shot that UNH goalie Casey DeSmith stopped, but Beattie followed up and gained control of the rebound. He backhanded the puck into the goal for his sixth tally of the season. Will Merchant also assisted on the goal

Iowa 9, Maine 2

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The University of Maine baseball team fell to Iowa 9-2 on Friday afternoon.

Brian Doran and Troy Black each had a pair of hits for the Black Bears.

Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano singled, stole second and scored when Doran singled to center field.

Iowa took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Maine swept

TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Maine softball squad dropped a pair of contests on Friday afternoon.

The Black Bears fell in Game 1 to Tennessee Tech 4-1 before dropping a 10-4 decision to Youngstown State.

EmJ Fogel went 4-for-8 with a RBI on the day while Kristen Koslosky with a run scored and a RBI. In Game 1, the Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Stephanie Wood led off the inning with a double down the line in left.

Koslosky followed with a one out single to the pitcher, advancing Wood to third. Wood was able to score later on an errant throw.
