PERU — Selectman Laurieann Milligan announced Monday night that elections to fill the other four seats on the board and the secretary’s position will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.
Last week, residents recalled Selectmen Tim Holland, Kathy Hussey, Ed Ferland and Dick Powell from office, along with board secretary Kathy Hussey.
At Monday’s meeting, Milligan signed the Notice of Elections as more than 20 people watched; some of them waiting to take out nomination papers.
She read the list of openings to be filled:
* One selectman for a 2-month term.
* One selectman for a 14-month term;
* One selectman for a 26-month term;
* One selectman for a three-year term; and
* One board secretary for a three-year term.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said nomination papers must be returned to the Town Office before 5 p.m. March 22. A minimum of 25 signatures and a maximum of 75 are required on the papers.
She cited a Maine law which says if for any reason a majority of the selectmen don’t remain in office, a majority of those remaining may call a town meeting. The law also says the municipal officers may designate a shorter time period for the availability of nomination papers.
One resident asked if the town should be conducting business if there’s only one selectman.
Milligan said she checked with the town attorney and the Maine Municipal Association, and she was comfortable that officials were proceeding correctly.
After the meeting, potential candidates were in the parking lot, getting signatures on their nomination papers.
Seeking signatures for the 26-month slot were:
* John Witherell, who tied with Powell in the last election and conceded to him;
* Danny Wing, who has served on the RSU 10 board and was a selectman seven or eight years ago;
* Wayne Moore, who has served on the wind ordinance committee and the Comprehensive Plan Committee; and
* Larry Snowman.
Seeking signatures for the 14-month slot were:
* Kevin Taylor, who has lived in Peru for the past eight years; and
* Lee Merrill, who has lived in Peru all his life.
Last week’s recall was the culmination of petitions seeking removal of all five selectmen. The petitions began after Hussey refused to leave either of her positions when voters passed an ordinance in November 2012 that prohibited town employees from simultaneously holding positions on the Board of Selectmen or Finance Committee. The MMA advised selectmen that she could finish her current term.
