RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Trails Center will host its first Rangeley Moose Dash on Sunday at the center’s site on Saddleback Mountain Road.

The event is sanctioned by the U.S. Snowshoe Association. There are four race categories. There is also a 5K untimed tour division.

The first race is a Kids 1K Fun Run, a lap around the stadium, starting at 8:30 a.m. The junior division 5K starts at 9 a.m. and adults 10K starts at 10 a.m.

The tour begins after the racers leave the stadium.

Onsite registration starts at 8 a.m. Entry fees range from $5 to $20 and include refreshments, a vegetarian chili and a homemade soup from a local establishment.

The Rangeley Moose Dash 5K and 10K courses take advantage of the varied terrain at the center, from wide straightaways to gradual ascents and descents, to some aggressive hill climbs and descents.

The course is a mix of single track, wide open ski trails, and virgin territory. The grooming staff will manage the trails so that a certain portion of them remain ungroomed or untrod for a while before the race.

The stadium, bigger than a football field, provides an excellent venue for mass starts and great visibility for finishes. A sidehill overlooking the stadium allows a place for spectators.

Prizes include two pairs of Dion racing snowshoes, a locally made Adirondack chair, moose muscle warmer from Maine Warmers, snowshoe hats with USSSA logo, Maine Mountain maple syrup and tickets to concerts at Skye Theatre.

Registration is available online through Skireg.com, or call the center at 864-4309.

Complete details, race maps downloads and registration form/waiver downloads are available online at the RLTC website: xcskirangeley.com.
