RANGELEY — The School Board approved three student field trips at its meeting Tuesday night.

Kelsey Orestis, geography teacher at Rangeley Lakes Regional School, outlined features of the trip to Quebec City for eighth-graders, a tradition Principal Sherry Connally started 25 years ago. The trip highlights the history and culture of Quebec and its links to Maine. It includes a walking tour of the city and a French dinner in the Old Town. Students have raised money for the trip, which does not require financial help from the school. Several chaperons have signed on.

“I do Smart Travel Tips with the students in class to help them be savvy travelers,” Orestis said. “They are always the best behaved of the many student groups in town, and I’m always proud of them.”

The board also approved the annual fourth grade trip to a sugarhouse in Lac Megantic for 12 students and four chaperons on Friday, April 5, and a trip for juniors to visit colleges in the Boston area.

The board acknowledged the first reading of the new Bullying and Cyberbullying in Schools Policy, which Superintendent Brian Foster said was the result of changes in the law, particularly with reference to cyberbullying. He said schools have been instructed to report bullying incidents to the State Department of Education quarterly.

The board’s discussion of the 2013-14 budget centered on a page of anticipated changes and unknown factors. Foster said the amount of state subsidy and division of local allocation for the Special Education budget could be cut 25 percent, or about $10,000 for Rangeley. There could also be cuts to the Maine Public Employees Retirement fund, which could amount to $41,528 that must be made up locally.

Other undecided sums include salary and benefits under negotiation for teachers, staff, and the new principal and superintendent; and the purchase of a new sound system for the gym, which could run as high as $17,000.

Chris Farmer of the Facilities Committee expressed concern at the low figure quoted for the funding of repairs and maintenance, and Steve Dudley of the Finance Committee warned that the extra expenses could be as high as $200,000.

“The new budget is $3.4 million, which is the same as last year,” Dudley said, “but the taxpayers’ segment will increase this year.”

Board Chairman Pam Ellis thanked Carol Hall of Magalloway Plantation for her service. She will be retiring from the board.

Student member Gabrielle Cavalier reported Abby Abbott is going to the state finals of the Poetry Out Loud competition. Also, she said, several Rangeley students are taking part in the Rangeley Friends of the Arts production of the musical “Bye Bye Birdie” on St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Cavalier also reported that 12 out of 15 seniors have been accepted to colleges, so far.

The board unanimously approved the appointment off Chip Smith for the post of Middle School softball coach. Smith was formerly a soccer coach for the school.
