PARIS — The Paris Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing next week on the possibility of collecting property taxes in four quarterly payments rather than twice per year.
At the Feb. 11 meeting of the Paris Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Amy Bernard proposed the idea to selectmen, saying it had worked for Bridgton.
Dividing property tax payments into four rather than two keeps the town’s cash flow moving better, and could be easier for residents to pay if they don’t have to save as much money for each payment.
Currently, Paris property taxes are due on May 1 and Nov. 1. Bernard proposed the town collect taxes in August, November, February and May on the 15th of the month.
The main problem, Bernard said, was that residents might not hear about the change and miss the August payment, which would be the first payment of the new year.
The public hearing would get word out and let residents voice opposition. Residents will vote on whether to switch to quarterly payments at the June town meeting.
The public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 25 at the Paris Fire Station. A regular selectmen’s meeting will follow.
