LEWISTON — A nonprofit group that offers services to adults with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges, with offices here and in Saco, agreed to pay $74,720 to settle claims over improper billing to Medicare and MaineCare, U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said Tuesday.

A federal agency started investigating in 2007 the hiring of a program manager by Support Solutions. That manager had previously been excluded from participation in all federal health care programs.

After learning about the manager’s exclusion, Support Solutions fired that worker.

After a joint investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Maine Attorney General’s Office and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the federal government and Maine government filed a complaint accusing Support Solutions of violating the federal False Claims Act from May 2006 through May 2007 by improperly billing Medicare and MaineCare for services through the excluded program manager.
