CASCO — A Cumberland County man was arrested after assaulting and attempting to strangle his girlfriend early Saturday, according to police.

Matthew Peterson, 38, of Casco, was apparently upset that the woman was out late with friends and tried to strangle her at their home when she returned, according to Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce.

After the assault, the woman and her young son, whose age was not disclosed, left the home but ran out of gas on Route 302 in Casco, according to Joyce.

A deputy saw the vehicle on the side of the road and stopped to investigate, and the woman notified the deputy of the assault and stated she was attempting to get to a friend’s house.

An arrest warrant was issued for Peterson and he was taken into custody Monday without incident, the sheriff said. He’s facing a charge of domestic violence assault strangulation, a Class B felony.

Peterson is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail. The woman did not require medical attention.
