AUGUSTA — A Republican senator is presenting a bill which would set into motion a plan to return the state-municipal revenue-sharing program to full funding over three years.

On Friday, Assistant Senate Minority Leader Roger Katz (KAYTS) outlined his bill before the budget-reviewing Appropriations Committee. Katz’s bill, co-sponsored by Republicans and Democrats, would return to full 5 percent state-municipal revenue sharing funding over three years.

Katz told the committee that his bill is not a reaction to Gov. Paul LePage’s plan to suspend municipal revenue sharing for two years. Katz says his bill was proposed well before the governor proposed the revenue sharing cut to balance the state budget.

Maine town and cities say the cut sought by LePage would shift taxes to local property taxpayers.
