DIXFIELD — Regular meetings of the RSU 10 board and the timeline for adopting a 2013-14 budget have been changed to allow the state time to determine whether the school district will be responsible for half the state’s contribution to teachers’ retirement costs.

Superintendent Tom Ward said this week that the districtwide meeting vote and the referendum validation vote will likely move to June.

Along with those changes, the public hearings in each of the three regions also will be rescheduled for later than the late May dates originally announced.

The district could be responsible for paying more than $400,000 for the state’s share of teacher retirement costs, which would make a significant impact on a proposed 2013-14 budget, including the possibility of eliminating several staff positions, Ward said.

As it stands now, the RSU 10 board directed Ward to come to the next regular meeting May 13 with additional cuts to the preliminary $36 million budget.

Reaching the $36 million figure meant eliminating money for high school accreditation, technology, building maintenance, two educational technicians and several teaching positions. It also meant eliminating a trip bus driver and a half-time industrial arts teacher, reducing stipends for coaching and cutting supplies for the classroom, extracurricular and cocurricular activities.

Ward said the budget validation vote would likely be held in each of the 12 member towns on June 25.
