RANGELEY — A team of eight divers searched parts of Rangeley Lake on Thursday afternoon for the bodies of three snowmobilers missing since Dec. 30.

Wardens had located the sleds of Kenneth Henderson, 40, of China, Glen Henderson, 43, of Sabattus, and John Spencer, 41, of Litchfield in the lake in February, but were forced to call off the search for their bodies until spring due to weather conditions.

Maine Warden Service officials believe the men were crossing the lake during whiteout conditions and drove into open water.

Maine Warden Service Lt. Kevin Adam said the search resumed Tuesday using sonar equipment in water that’s between 70 and 130 feet deep. He said sonar is less effective at those depths.

He said divers went into the water for the first time Thursday to search areas of interest indicated by sonar. The initial area turned out to be a rock, so divers returned to shore to pick up additional equipment and search another area that was more than 100 feet deep.

Water temperature at the surface was 50 degrees, Adam said.
