FARMINGTON — Garden Days at the Hope Harvest Community Garden continued Thursday with guided shopping tours to help people find healthful, quality food at affordable prices.
One more tour in the series is planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the garden next to Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Information on container gardens, canning and healthful recipe ideas also were available, and the Healthy Community Coalition mobile health unit was there to provide screenings and information.
The free shopping tours highlight skills such as buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices to find bargains, identifying whole grains and sticking to a budget.
After the tour, participants received a free gift card to the grocery store, recipes and tips on buying healthful, low-cost foods, a reusable grocery bag and a calculator. Each participant in the container gardening event receives a bucket and a seedling of their choice to plant and take home, said Laura Quynn of the Healthy Community Coalition .
The Garden Days series is sponsored by the coalition and Healthy Maine Partnerships. The first three events in the series took place on June 6, 12 and 13.
Staff from the coalition and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension provided information Thursday as master gardener Sally Shepardson scattered seeds in the community garden where produce is grown and donated, previously to local food banks.
