LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 board on Thursday took a first look at a proposal to restructure the district’s two elementary schools.
Superintendent Robert Wall said the current situation of having kindergarten through grade five classes at the Jay Elementary School and Livermore Elementary School is not working as well as it could.
“We put a lot of emphasis on high school. What we’re doing is not serving all students effectively,” he said. “Fixing students at middle school and high school is not effective.”
He proposed having K-2 students in one school and grades 3-5 in the other.
“This would also make for a cohesive class all the way through to graduation,” he said.
He asked the board to study the proposal so that they could act on it at the June 27 meeting.
“I ask for board support to begin the process,” he said. “Students need to be competent in language arts and math.”
If approved, a transition would not take place until the fall of 2014.
During the upcoming school year, staff and administration would devise a vision statement, undergo training, work toward teaming and take part in tasks that would support the change.
In other matters, the board approved early graduation for junior Demitria Dube from Spruce Mountain High School in Livermore Falls. She said she wants to take the final two credits she needs this summer and begin college in the fall to study nursing.
The board also re-elected Denise Rodzen of Livermore Falls as chairwoman for school year 2013-14. Jackie Knight of Livermore Falls was chosen vice chairwoman.
Knight succeeds Mary Redmond-Luce of Jay, who resigned last month. Her position has not been filled.
Two new board members from Jay, Clint Brooks and Michael Schaedler, were also welcomed.
