RANGELEY — The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday to accept the letter of resignation from Town Manager Tim Kane.

Kane, who sent his letter to the board last Thursday, is leaving to accept a position of school superintendent in Washington County.

His last day of work in Rangeley will be July 19.

Following a brief public hearing with input from Mike Flewelling, representing C & C Food Design, the board voted to revise Flewelling’s liquor license for The Shed, as well as a special amusement permit. The revision amended the previously granted license to include the fenced outdoor area of the restaurant. Live music would end by The Shed’s 8 p.m. closing time. The amusement permit allows pig roasts.

The board also approved Rangeley Friends of the Arts’ African Music Night, tentatively located at the hangar at the Steven A. Bean Municipal Airport in Rangeley, pending approval by the FAA and proof of insurance.

The board approved two appointments — Jeannine Sahagen to the Ordinance Committee, and Larry Koob returns to the Airport Commission. Both appointments last until June 30, 2016.

With three bids for the transfer station’s oversized bulky waste containers, the board awarded the contract to Goodwin Builders, whose bid came in under the agreed budget.

The board rescinded previously released funds for the sidewalk planned at Lakeside Park. Members of the Veterans Post did a walk through of the site and were opposed to the removal of shrubbery around the Veterans Monument, which the sidewalk plan would necessitate. The veterans noted that the monument is a place of honor and reflection and offered to shorten an arm of the hedge that reaches toward Main Street and obscures traffic vision.

Parks and Recreation has installed buoys and ropes at the swimming area, and has installed “swim at your own risk” signs, since no lifeguards have applied for the post. Kane said one potential applicant still has to take the certification class at the University of Maine at Farmington.

A letter from Denise Mercier expressed interest in forming a Cemetery Committee. Town Clerk Ethna Thompson volunteered to research the history and duties of the committee, which last served in Rangeley in the 1980s.

The board heard an informal petition from property owners and residents on High Street, asking to make the street a one-way thoroughfare from Pond Street to Pleasant Street. The one-way designation would allow repairs not to endanger the trees that line the street, one of the few tree-lined roads left in town. The board favored the request, and also favored the suggestion to lower the speed limit and prohibit heavy trucks from using the road. The board plans to contact an arborist to check the condition of the trees, and Chairman Gary Shaffer suggested scheduling a public hearing.

Board member Pam White apologized for the poor quality of the sound system at the recent town meeting, as many of the attendees complained after the meeting that speakers were inaudible. White hopes the issue will be corrected before the next meeting. Shaffer, who said he doesn’t know the age of the sound system or if it can be repaired, agreed that it must be done.
