PORTLAND (AP) — A man described as a major player in a New York-to-Maine drug smuggling operation has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.

Hasan Worthy of Portland was also sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to 10 years of probation upon release.

He was convicted in November of four drug-related charges.

Prosecutors say the 36-year-old Worthy was a top dealer who arranged shipments of cocaine and heroin that women couriers smuggled inside their bodies on planes and cars from New York. The drugs were distributed in packages to lower-level dealers in Maine.

Worthy was arrested based on numerous intercepted phone calls he had with another high-level dealer.

Several other people are facing charges in the case.
