FREEPORT (AP) — Freeport is going to have to find a new motto because it’s no longer the “birthplace of Maine.”

The town manager said the debunked motto that became an local legend is being removed from town documents and websites following a vote by the Town Council this week.

As the story went, representatives from the Joint Commission of Massachusetts and Maine met at the Jameson Tavern, established in 1779, to discuss separating into individual states.

At least, that’s what was on a plaque outside the tavern.

But now that claim has been invalidated. Even the Daughters of the American Revolution, which installed the plaque, acknowledges that the claim was wrong.
