MECHANIC FALLS — At the next meeting of the Mechanic Falls Historical Society, Kevin Farr will present the pulpit Bible from the Mechanic Falls Universalist Church to the society.

Farr was curating the records for the First Universalist Church of Norway when he came across the old Bible, which was a gift to the Mechanic Falls church from the Norway Universalist Sunday School in 1876. According to Farr the Bible “was subsequently returned to the Norway church in Aug 1950, apparently when the Mechanic Falls Universalist church ceased to exist.”

Farr said the Norway Universalist Church board of the directors has permitted the return of the Bible to Mechanic Falls because “it seems more pertinent to the town of Mechanic Falls rather than the Norway church in spite of the connection.”

The Mechanic Falls Universalist Church was a vibrant religious and community center for the town from the latter part of the 19th century until the end of the Second World War. For many years it hosted the area’s high school graduations.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the society’s headquarters, 64 Elm St.
