STRONG — Lois Barker, a retired teacher with RSU 58, will serve as the town’s new representative on the school board.
Selectmen questioned candidates Marc Chaput, Scott Luce and Barker at Tuesday’s meeting before casting their votes. Each candidate presented their qualifications to fill the position recently vacated by Alan Smith. Smith attended a September school board meeting but resigned soon afterward, citing family health concerns.
In other business, South Strong Road resident Peter Seavey reported that dozens of automobile tires have been illegally discarded on his road. He volunteered to bring 56 of them to the side of the road and asked if the town would pay for their disposal.
Selectmen said there’s no money to cover the cost.
Contractor Jeff Murphy presented selectmen with options for replacing siding on the Town Office. He included roofing, siding and costs to fix gables and overhangs that will reduce problems with ice and snow.
“We have $8,000 in the account, so we need to talk about money,” Board of Selectmen Vice Chairman Jim Burrill said.
Selectmen also agreed unanimously to continue having Sean Tennant service the Town Office computers, rather than switching to API Technology, as proposed by board Chairwoman Joan Reed. Since Tennant has worked for the town for several years without incident, Selectman Milt Baston noted, there was no reason to change.
Town treasurer and office manager Sandra Mitchell announced the first week of December is reserved for installation and training on the TRIO Motor Vehicle Registration software. The town has contracted with the Bangor-based Harris Company for other TRIO software and voted to add the software to the system to allow faster and more efficient computerized transactions with the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles. The software will provide a method to maintain inventory for stickers, plates, MVR3s, decals and boosters.
Baston also reviewed school budget figures provided by the Kingfield Independent School Committee. Figures, he said, provided a glimpse of the financial contributions of Kingfield and the resulting loss if they withdraw from the school system. He also urged residents to attend the school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Strong Elementary School.
