WILTON — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday gave its approval for Town Manager Rhonda Irish to sign papers for the purchase of land next to Bass Park.
The property is owned by the estate of Herman Grover and the closing is expected to take place Friday, Dec. 6, Irish said. The land will provide a parking area and trail next to Bass Park.
The board also gave its approval to allow Parks and Recreation Department Director Frank Donald to accept funds from the estate of Charles W. Scribner for the department. A total of $7,600 was willed to the department and was earmarked for care and maintenance of Kineowatha Park, Irish said.
In other business, Irish told the board that asbestos has been removed from the Wilton Tannery and the Department of Environmental Protection has signed off on the work. The underground storage tank has been cleaned but not removed. She said she expects it will happen this month.
The board briefly discussed recent economic development issues, including the potential sale of three businesses. They unanimously voted to hold an “economic summit” in January with Alison Hagerstrom from the Greater Franklin Development Corp. and others “to discuss continued economic development planning for the town,” according to the meeting minutes.
The three businesses mentioned have not been sold but board members had heard rumors of the possible sale of one, she said.
Berry Hill Agway is for sale and to her knowledge has not been sold, and Bradley’s in downtown Wilton is for sale, she said.
There have been some positive economic moves this year, including expansion of Barclaycard and some new, small businesses that have started in the downtown area, she said.
