FARMINGTON — When employees at Big Lots on the Wilton Road smelled propane in the back of the store Thursday morning, they evacuated all customers and employees and called for help.
The Fire Department responded to the call about 11:24 a.m. and found the odor was from a propane delivery being made at the back of Sears, an adjacent store, Farmington fire Chief Terry Bell said.
Sometimes there is a little gas that seeps between the nozzle and a trap within the tank during delivery, according to a local propane dealer. Apparently during cold weather, the gas smell can be more noticeable.
Big Lots also uses propane, causing the employees to be concerned when they smelled it, Bell said.
There were only a few customers that were evacuated, he said.
