HARTFORD — The Road Committee will hold two meetings this month to discuss certain projects, selectmen were told at their meeting Thursday night.

The five-member committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, to review plans for Mahoney, Sam Annis and Howard roads. On Jan. 21, it will discuss work to be done on Stetson and Gurney Hill roads.

Residents are being sent invitations to attend the meeting at which their road will be discussed.

The Road Committee will make recommendations to the Budget Committee and selectmen.

Committee Chairman Harley Swanson and fellow members Dan Maddox, Neil Hanley, Barry Langer and Leslie Boness are developing one-year and five-year plans for road maintenance, and will consider a 10-year plan, which is called for in the town Comprehensive Plan.

The Board of Selectmen on Thursday discussed the possibility that unauthorized people may be using sand and salt from the town shed. Swanson said the Road Committee would recommend to the Budget Committee that a camera be installed in the shed.

Another topic Thursday was a new state law that requires contractors using large equipment to be certified by the Department of Environmental Protection in erosion and sediment control practices. Any contractor disturbing more than one cubic yard of soil in a shoreland zone has to have the work supervised by an individual certified by DEP in erosion control.

Board Chairman Lee Holman said that both contractors working for the town are certified.

Planning Board member Arthur Harvey asked if there previously had been any problems.

“I don’t see why the law is necessary if there is no problem,” he said.

Holman said the town would abide by the law, but would have the Planning Board study it and give an opinion.

Holman said she visited the shed and saw a lot of sand was gone. The board discussed if someone should order more.
