OXFORD — Two people were hospitalized Monday after their car and a tow truck collided at Route 26 and Oxford Street, Oxford police Sgt. Alan Coffin said.
The crash happened at 4 p.m. when a tow truck owned and driven by William Penfold of Oxford was heading north on Route 26 and a 2013 Kia Optima was turning out of Oxford Street when they collided.
The male driver of the Kia was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland with a severe head injury and his female passenger with unknown injuries was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital shortly before 4:30 p.m., Coffin said.
Neither name was yet being released, he said. Penfold was not injured.
There were no early indications of a cause and no charges by Monday night. Coffin said the accident remains under investigation.
Police were at the scene until almost 10 p.m. to reconstruct the accident with the help of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police.
A section of Route 26 was closed for more than five hours, with traffic diverted to Pottle Road north of the crash scene.
