BOSTON, Mass. — Paul F. Macri, 65, died on Wednesday, April 9, in Boston, after a courageous fight against leukemia. His family was at his side.

He was born in 1948 in Montour Falls, N.Y., the oldest son of Rocco and Norma Macri. He graduated from Wesleyan University and the University of Maine School of Law. While in law school, he was an editor of the Maine Law Review. After law school, he clerked for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He was admitted to practice in Maine in 1976, the Maine Bar in 1976, the United States Court of Appeals, First Circuit in 1986 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993. It is widely thought to be true among members of the Maine Bar that he argued more cases before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court than any other private practitioner in Maine history.

For many years, he was a partner at Berman Simmons. Paul was listed in the Best Lawyers of America, was a fellow of the Maine Bar Foundation, the Maine Board of Bar Examiners, the State Court Library Committee and a trustee of the Androscoggin County Law Library. In 2005, he became only the third Maine lawyer to be inducted into the American Academy of Appellate Attorneys. For a number of years, Paul wrote a legal column for the Sun Journal newspaper, The Legal Review.

He was a member of the Androscoggin Chorale for many years, and was the founding president of the Maine Music Society and sang for many years with the a cappella group, Top Forty. Music was his passion, along with a love of writing, history and literature.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Anne; son, Benjamin; daughter-in-law, Alise Upitis; grandson, Otomars Paul; mother and stepfather, Norma and George Baldassarre; aunt, Ruth Benson; sister, Lora Schilder; brother, John; sister-in-law, Darlene; nieces, Elena and Nicole Schilder and Rachel Sempler; nephew, Dan Macri; as well as his extended family and many friends.
