NORWAY — The He-Brews Coffee House is preparing to open this summer.
“We’re still making progress,” said Randy Olson, one of the organizers of the shop at 10 Tannery St. He said the group hopes to start training volunteers the first week of May.
Olson and other residents came up with the idea to open a coffeehouse last year to provide a place for people in need of assistance and others could have a free cup of coffee and conversation. Eventually, they hope to have music shows and be a resource for business people looking for day laborers.
In August 2013, the Planning Board approved a change of use permit for the former Snocraft building. Although the group had hoped to open in the fall, a larger than expected cleanup and a very cold winter with no heat in the building delayed the work.
While a lot of work already has been completed, such as replacing windows and plumbing, the group is waiting for additional furniture and a commercial coffeemaker.
“It was a lot bigger than we thought,” Olson said of the cleanup.
They hope to open in June and have a furnace installed later this year. They must have a final inspection by the town before they can open, Olson said.
Meanwhile, the group is also getting ready to host a Christian concert at the Oxford Fairgrounds off Pottle Road in Oxford June 27-29. A coffeehouse will be set up in one of the exhibition halls.
