A Lewiston man was sentenced in federal court Thursday to 20 years in prison and supervised release for life for transporting child pornography.

Frederick W. Butler Jr., 44, pleaded guilty to the charge in December.

In April 2013, Butler sent an email message that had 19 images attached depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct to a recipient in Oregon, according to court records.

In 2001, Butler was convicted in federal court for receiving child pornography. Six years earlier, he was convicted in state court of gross sexual assault.

Because of his prior convictions, he was subject to an enhanced sentence of at least 15 years in prison, according to a written statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II.

His Thursday sentencing hearing was held in U.S. District Court in Portland.

The investigation into Butler’s case was handled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
