CASCO — Police said a Harrison man was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through three towns Wednesday morning.

Christopher Wade Hunt, 33, was charged with operating as a habitual offender, leaving the scene of an accident, two counts of eluding police, driving to endanger and receiving stolen property, according to a news release issued Thursday by Cumberland County Sheriff’s Capt. Don Goulet.

The incident began at 10:30 a.m. when deputies were investigating a hit-and-run crash in Standish. They determined the vehicle involved was a stolen 2001 Buick Century.

Police later located the stolen vehicle on Route 302 in Naples and attempted to stop it. According to Goulet, Hunt refused to stop the car and fled at speeds up to 100 mph into oncoming traffic. Police halted attempts to apprehend him because of the risk to public safety.

After an hour and a half, police located Hunt again. Hunt drove onto dead-end Libby Road in Casco, where deputies attempted to apprehend him, Goulet said.

After just over four miles, Hunt drove the vehicle over a spike mat laid by deputies, puncturing three of four tires. He eventually crashed near a home at Roosevelt Trail, where he abandoned the car and fled on foot into the woods, Goulet said.

A sheriff’s dog and deputies tracked Hunt to a tree stand behind the home, where he was taken into custody, Goulet said.

He was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland where he is being held on $10,000 cash bail.

Additional charges are expected from the Norway Police Department. The case is still under investigation according to Norway police Detective Gary Hill.
