JAY — Brooke Steele felt honored to be in the first combined class to graduate from Spruce Mountain High School.

“I never thought our school would be as successful,” she said.

Brooke, previously of the South Campus in Livermore Falls, was among 90 seniors to graduate Saturday night while hundreds of parents, grandparents and other relatives and many friends snapped photos and applauded each new graduate as he or she received a diploma.

The band played many upbeat tunes between speakers and Class of 2014 guitarist, Christopher Floyd played an instrumental solo titled “Palm Trees, Helicopters and Gasoline.”

For this first combined graduation, the top two students from each campus addressed the class and the audience.

North Campus Valedictorian Emily Taylor charged the class with three questions: “Who am I, where am I going and who will I be?”

“It’s time to leave the mask really deep and time to show the world who we really are,” she said.

Her brother, Salutatorian Erik Taylor, compared the challenges of life to a Rubik’s Cube as he twisted the multi-colored cube until it came out right.

“Goodbye, high school; hello, college,” he said.

South Campus Valedictorian Ian Jewett used an analogy of cooking Ramen noodles on how to succeed in life.

He advised everything in moderation, patience and making good use of the time given.

During her farewell speech, South Campus Salutatorian Hannah Melotto thanked teachers for being patient and for remembering that life sometimes gets in the way of responsibilities.

Jay board member Vicki McLeod and Superintendent Robert Wall congratulated the graduates. McLeod’s daughter, Alyssa Timberlake, was among the school’s graduates.

So, too, were three juniors who completed requirements and graduated with the seniors: Rachel Read, Jonathan Morse and Tiffany Hutchins.

Both campuses each had top 10 students this year, as well. But next year, there will be one top 10, one valedictorian and one salutatorian.

The former Jay School Department and former RSU 36 in Livermore Falls combined in 2011. School year 2013-14 was the first year when all secondary students were together.

Once the graduation ceremony ended, most graduates were headed to the Waterville YMCA for a night of games, food, music and other activities.
