AUBURN- The 54th Annual Maine Iris Society Show will take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Auburn Middle School, 38 Falcon Drive. The entrance to the cafeteria where the show is held is in the back of the school.
Irises will be displayed and judged, as both individual flower stalks and interpretive floral arrangements. A display of peony flowers and hosta leaves will also be staged. Several people’s choice categories allow attendees to vote on their favorites. A sale of median iris rhizomes and potted perennials will accompany the show. Admission is free.
This year’s show is chaired by Peter Young of Buckfield. Ted White of Minot is in charge of the show schedule, awards and entries. Also taking entries will be Beth DeHaas of Randolph, Valerie Feeney of Falmouth, Carol Foster of South Paris and Joyce Mitchell of Otisfield.
Pauline Grenier of Minot and Russ Moors of Auburn will coordinate the hosta leaf exhibit. Other club members will be hard at work on all aspects of the show. Members will be available to answer the public’s questions about growing irises. The Maine Iris Society president is Harriet Robinson of Otisfield.
The horticultural division will be judged by accredited American Iris Society judges. The best specimen of the show is awarded “Queen of the Show.” The best Siberian Iris will win the 17th annual Currier McEwen award. The best seedling of the show, hybridized by a member, will earn the John White award. There are also awards for members with the most blue ribbons.
Judy Alderman of Harrison and Florida is chairing the artistic division, which will be judged by a team from the Garden Club Federation of Maine. The best design earns the 23rd annual Alice Yates award.
The Society, an affiliate of the American Iris Society, offers members and the general public a chance to learn about irises, enjoy their beauty and buy some for their gardens. Members are avid gardeners who enjoy sharing the beauty of flowers. Membership information will be available at the show along with a schedule of upcoming public events.
