LEWISTON — Lewiston School Superintendent Bill Webster said Tuesday that he wants to hear from parents and community members interested in serving on a new redistricting committee.

The School Committee authorized the committee Monday night. Members of that group will be charged with recommending what grades will be in the new school that replaces Martel Elementary, and which students will go there.

The committee will have 22 members, including 12 parents, two from each of the city’s six elementary schools.

The new school will include Martel students, and likely Farwell and Longley students, but the makeup could change depending on what the committee recommends and is approved by the School Committee.

Construction would begin in 2017 and the school would open in the fall of 2018.

For that to happen, the redistricting committee would be charged with giving recommendations to the School Committee in January. That will mean multiple meetings between Sept. 16 and Jan. 18.

The committee will be made up of two parents from each of the city’s elementary schools, plus two community members, Farwell, Martel and Longley principals, Superintendent Webster, one Lewiston Planning Board member, two school committee members and one community member appointed by the Lewiston City Council.

Parents interested in serving should contact their school principal or PTO president. Each principal is asked to work with their PTO and identify two parents for the committee.

Community members who are not parents of elementary school children are asked to send a letter to Superintendent Webster at Lewiston Public Schools, 36 Oak St., Lewiston.

The two community members will be selected no later than Sept. 15. The other members of the committee will be selected by Sept. 12.

The first meeting will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Dingley Building.
