The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Ramada Inn on Pleasant Street in Lewiston.
Last month, Pilote suffered a stroke in his home after a three-mile morning run. His daughter Nicole was able to get him immediate care. He underwent surgery to open his skull to reduce swelling and is being treated at the New England Rehabilitation Center in Portland, according to an email from his sister Susan Shaw and sister-in-law Lisa Laliberte.
Pilote has spent a lifetime serving others. After a tour in the Army, he became an officer for the Lewiston Police Department. In that role, he received the State of Maine Top Cop award for bravery after saving a baby from a burning building in 1996, a story that was featured in the book, “Angels Everywhere.”
Pilote also went to Washington, D.C., to be honored and represent the state for the award.
After a few years in the Police Department, Pilote became a Lewiston firefighter and completed his college degree. He retired from the department in 2014.
Pilote had recently begun full-time work at Tancrede Building Movers, a company he purchased from his brother-in-law, who died of cancer in 2013.
Pilote has been a lifelong resident of the community and together with his wife Susan raised his family, Justin and Nicole and stepson Devon, while serving the community and supporting his extended family and his church, according to an email.
Susan Pilote, assistant principal at Tripp Middle School in Turner, has been with her husband as he recovers.
The January benefit, to help with medical expenses and remodeling the Pilote home to meet his needs, will include appetizers and desserts provided by members of the Lewiston Firefighters Association. Music will be performed by the Backwoods Road Band with special guests, Back to Basics. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.
Tickets are available by calling 207-754-7332. Those unable to attend may make contributions payable to Guy Pilote at Maine Family Credit Union, 555 Sabattus Street, Lewiston, ME 04240 or at gofundme.com and search, “Support Guy’s Recovery.”
