LEWISTON — Police said a woman was hospitalized and her ex-boyfriend was in custody Wednesday following a stabbing on Bartlett Street.
The suspect, 29-year-old Joshua Blackman of 87 Bartlett St., was led screaming and thrashing to a cruiser. He was charged with elevated aggravated assault, domestic assault and criminal threatening, according to police.
Investigators said Blackman stabbed his ex-girlfriend, 38-year-old Melissa Degrace, of Lewiston, and threatened others who tried to intervene.
The stabbing occurred in a parking lot outside the apartment house, police said. Degrace’s lungs were pierced, according to investigators, although she was expected to survive her injuries.
She was still being treated late Wednesday night at Central Maine Medical Center. It was unclear where she had been living.
Police said Blackman and Degrace previously were romantically involved.
Police converged at Bartlett and Pine streets at about 5:20 p.m. after a woman was reportedly stabbed in the upper body. Witnesses said a man was seen fleeing the area, leading police to surround a building in search of the suspect.
Uniformed and undercover officers arrived and by 5:30 p.m., the stretch of Bartlett Street between Pine and Ash streets was clogged with cruisers and unmarked cars.
While the woman was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital, police swarmed the apartment building at 87 Bartlett St. and shortly before 6 p.m., they found Blackman and took him into custody.
The knife used in the attack, police said, was recovered by investigators.
Police brought about a half dozen potential witnesses to the Park Street station for interviews.
One man, who said he had been walking near Pine and Bartlett streets, said he did not immediately realize that a woman had been stabbed. He heard shouts, he said, and saw at least one man running before police and paramedics arrived.
Blackman was being held Tuesday night at the Androscoggin County Jail. According to court records, he has a criminal history of domestic violence in the Lewiston-Auburn area. He is expected to make an initial court appearance later in the week.
