Most of us see road kill every day. But who reports it? Maine Audubon wants you to. It’s asking the public to contribute to Wildlife Road Watch, a web-based map and database that will record your observations of wildlife, alive or dead, near the side of the road.
Especially since it’s spring, animals are more likely to be on the move, so keep an eye out. When you report the information, it will be used by biologists with Maine Audubon, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Maine Department of Transportation to examine how to reduce risks to wildlife and drivers.
Roads often block endangered animals from getting to where they need to go — and often they don’t make it.
“Blanding’s turtles and spotted turtles are likely to become extinct in Maine due to road mortality,” wrote the Maine Audubon in a recent press release.
Recording where they’re being seen or killed is one of the first steps to protecting them.
