SANFORD (AP) — Authorities say a fire in a Sanford apartment building has displaced 12 residents, but there were no reports of injuries.

The blaze at the seven-unit building on River Street was reported at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Mutual aid from six other communities was called and the fire was knocked down in about an hour.

Fire Chief Steve Benotti says it appears as if the fire started in the back on the second floor of the three-story building and then spread up the backside of the building and into the attic. The exact cause remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
