PARIS — Police said a Mexico man faces multiple felony charges after breaking into a neighbor’s home and stealing cash and jewelry.
Keith Provencher, 33, appeared in Oxford County District Court on Wednesday afternoon on charges of burglary, theft and violation of conditions of release.
According to an affidavit by Mexico police Chief Roy Hodsdon, police received a complaint June 20 from a 64-year-old homeowner that multiple items had been stolen while he was away on vacation.
Hodsdon said it appeared that a ladder was used to get into an unlocked second-story window. Among the items stolen were $850 in cash, an estimated $1,500 in jewelry, baseball memorabilia, a camera, a printer and two safes.
Police became suspicious of Provencher’s involvement because a trail led from the backyard of an apartment he was renting to the victim’s home, Hodsdon said.
Several days later, police searched a Mexico residence and found a Kodak camera and printer that were later identified as stolen from Provencher’s neighbor, Hodsdon said. The occupant told police they bought the items from Provencher.
Hodsdon said Provencher denied taking the goods. He was arrested Tuesday and brought to the Oxford County Jail in Paris. He posted bail and was released late Wednesday afternoon, a corrections officer said.
In 2009, he pleaded guilty to stealing firearms from a federally licensed dealer.
