New this year: Fun Day Sunday; missing: Chief Worumbo canoe race

LEWISTON — The 33rd annual three-day Moxie Festival kicks off this Friday, July 10, with fair weather in the forecast and some changes for festival-goers.

New this year will be Moxie Family Fun Day at Beaver Park on Sunday. Running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and free to all, the event will include games and activities for the whole family, a performance by WolfPack Fitness and a geocaching scavenger hunt with LL Bean’s Outdoor Discovery School. There will also be swimming and fishing and grills will be available for cooking.

The annual Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race will not be taking place this year because of funding issues, but there are plans to have it back in place next year, according to festival coordinator Tracey Steuber.

Due to construction, all of the events held on Friday will take place at Lisbon Public Works on Capitol Avenue. Friday night’s final festivities will be a block party, featuring DJ-BrianC and a fireworks display.

Also new this year: ATMs will be available. One will be by Maurice Bonneau’s Sausage Kitchen at 36 Main St. and the other by the Rec MTM Center at 18 School St.

“We expect another great turnout this year,” Steuber said. “There is something at the Moxie Festival for every person — young, old and anywhere in between.”

Saturday — dubbed “Moxie Day” — remains the biggest day of the festival. It kicks off with the annual 5K Fun Run and Road Race, followed by the Moxie Festival Parade. (See our schedule for details or go to www.moxiefestival.com.)

Highly anticipated festival staples, including the Moxie Recipe Contest and the Moxie Chug-n-Challenge — both at the MTM Center — are ready to go, as are many local vendors and shop owners who are gearing up for the annual event.

Saturday night will be capped off with the Moxie Concert in the Park featuring a performance by Bon Jersey, a Bon Jovi tribute band. The concert will start at 6 p.m.

As always, the beloved Moxie Car Show will take place Sunday morning with the judging taking place early in the afternoon.

People of all ages are encouraged to go out to Lisbon and enjoy the festival honoring Maine’s official soft drink with friends and family.
