1931 – 2015

PORTLAND — After a long life well lived, Stuart Cummings, 84, passed away at the Maine Medical Center on Thursday, July 16. He was born on April 2, 1931, the son of Charles F. and Elizabeth B. Cummings. He attended school in Norway, graduating from Norway High School in 1948. Like his father and his son, he attended Bowdoin College, graduating in 1952.

On March 22, 1953, Mr. Cummings married Joan I. Whitten of South Paris. This past spring they celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Together they raised three children and five dogs.

Mr. Cummings was a devoted member of his community. His entire working life was spent at C.B. Cummings and Sons Co. from which he retired as president. He served on the boards of the Norway Savings Bank, the Norway Memorial Library, Stephens Memorial Hospital and the town of Norway Planning Board. He was a long-time member of the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club providing the club with many “happy dollars” and lots of good humor —  he looked forward to serving juice at the annual pancake breakfast. He served in the U.S. Navy, traveling around the world aboard the USS Waldron.

Above all, Mr. Cummings loved his family. He was an avid fan of his children and grandchildren and he attended nearly every athletic and academic event possible. A true outdoorsman, he was happiest hunting woodcock or fishing at Kennebago Lake with his dear friends.

He leaves his devoted wife, Joan; son, Brad and his wife, Cynthia Reedy, of Norway; daughter, Lisa and her husband, Mike Minkowski, of Monmouth; grandchildren, Charlie and his wife, Kaylyn, Claire and Tom Cummings and Candace Minkowski; sister, Frances C. Partridge and her sons Bob, Brian and Jay Partridge; daughter-in-law, Debbie Costello and her husband, Jim and life-long friend, Don Gouin.

Mr. Cummings was predeceased by his parents and his son, Gary.
