1924 – 2015
AUGUSTA — Normand H. Caron, 91, of Augusta, passed away early Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, after a short illness, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Normand was born in Auburn on March 3, 1924. He was educated in Auburn schools and entered the U.S. Army at 17 to fight in World War II. He served in the 3rd Army as a jeep and truck driver with General Patton’s forces and also served in the 5th, 90th and 95th armies. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a TEC 5 after receiving several service and campaign medals. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After the war, he returned to Maine and became a union mason, a job he held in Florida and Maine until his retirement in 1989. He helped build many buildings in the cities of Maine, including the Portland Museum of Art building and the Key Bank building in Augusta. He was a foreman for many of his jobs.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting and golf. He was a big Bruins and Red Sox fan.
Normand married the former Lorette St. Hilaire on Nov. 25, 1948, at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston. Together, they had six children, Doris Berube, Nancy Trundy, Gary Caron, Roxanne Marczak, Kevin Caron and Steve Caron. They also had 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. They lived in the Lewiston/Auburn area until Lorette passed away in 1996.
He was also predeceased by five brothers and one sister.
