OXFORD — Selectmen on Thursday approved spending $10,000 toward making a turning lane on Route 26 from Maine-ly Action Sports south to the Route 121 intersection.

The project is funded by the town, by businesses benefiting from the improvement and the state.

Oxford Town Manager Michael Chammings said Dunkin’ Donuts in The Big Apple store at Welchville Junction will contribute $80,000 to the project.

The project will involve modifying the road shoulders to state road specifications and painting new lane lines.

Another construction project, a new bridge on Gore Road, will soon come to a close. According to selectmen, the road is scheduled to reopen this weekend.

In another traffic issue, Selectman Peter Laverdiere suggested the electronic message sign in front of the Recreation Department at the intersection of Pleasant and King streets is too bright at night for safety. He said he found the lights blinding.

Board of Selectmen Chairman Scott Owens said he would contact the Recreation Department to request the brightness be turned down at night.

Selectmen also approved replacing a tree at the Center Meeting House on Route 26 with one dedicated to Jim Lamb, the late husband of Christine Lamb. She made the request, saying her husband played Santa Clause for the Santa Visits Oxford program for years, according to Chammings.

The town has two $250 gift certificates from Modern Woodmen to replace trees and selectmen agreed to use one for the Center Meeting House tree.
