FARMINGTON — Saint Joseph’s College rallied from an 11-point, second-quarter deficit to take a 62-54 win Monday night over the University of Maine at Farmington in an NCAA Division III women’s non-conference basketball game at Dearborn Gymnasium.
Struggling offensively, the Monks (4-1) went on a 10-2 tear late in the second quarter to cut the Beavers’ (1-3) lead to 28-25 at halftime. Kelsi McNamara’s (10 points) lay-up and 3-pointer, coupled with four points from teammate Emily Quirion, helped narrow the gap.
“We’ve been playing at a high intensity level, but tonight Farmington did a good job taking that away from us,” St. Joe’s coach Mike McDevitt said. “We got on a good run of consistent play late in the second and early third quarter that helped bring us back.”
St. Joe’s battled back to take the lead early in the third quarter on Brianne Maloney’s lay-up at 9:15 for a 29-28 advantage. Morgan Cahill’s inside play, highlighted by eight points in the paint in three minutes, pushed the lead to 35-31 before the Beavers could recover.
“We had a good run in the middle of the game,” Cahill said. “I started to struggle, but we kicked the ball back outside and hit some shots. That’s been a big part of our game.”
UMF countered with the spectacular inside game of Meghan Smith, who battered the Monks on the boards, grabbing a career high 22 rebounds while pounding in 16 points. Teammate Kennadi Grover also proved effective down low, scoring 15 points and collecting five rebounds.
Grover’s turn around jumper from five feet cut the Monks’ lead to 44-43 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter but St. Joe’s quickly countered on an Abbie Eastman 3-pointer from the right side to take a 47-43 lead after three quarters.
“We got off to a good start,” UMF coach Jamie Beaudoin said. “We had trouble scoring in the second quarter and that disrupted our play. Offensively we couldn’t find anyone but Smith to go to. She battled all night to create something for herself and her teammates.”
Cahill went to work again in the fourth quarter, scoring back-to-back baskets to boost the Monks’ lead to 54-46 with 7:58 left in the game.
Quirion’s long 3-pointer put the game out of reach at 59-50 with 1:50 remaining. Quirion finished the game with 14 points, connecting on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
St. Joe’s finished the game 22-of-68 from the field and 12-0f-21 from the free throw line. UMF connected on 20-of-55 from the floor and 12-of-20 from the line.
