LEWISTON — A 45-year-old Lewiston woman was charged Wednesday with making false claims to receive state and federal welfare benefits.

Michelle Grimmo, of 2 Mark St., was indicted by a grand jury on charges of theft by deception and forgery and two counts of unsworn falsification.

According to court documents, Grimmo “intentionally failed to disclose or report her income, her shelter expense and/or her assets, all of which impressions were false and which defendant did not believe to be true.”

Grimmo lied, according to the indictment, to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the Transitional Food Assistance Program, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, the Emergency Assistance Program, the Transitional Child Care Program, the Transitional Transportation Program and MaineCare.

The value of the benefits is more than $10,000, according to court documents.

Some of the allegations date back nearly a decade. According to the indictment, in 2007 Grimmo lied about her expenses and income to receive various benefits.

In 2010, according to court documents, Grimmo falsified a landlord statement that she filed with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. In 2013, she misled an investigator about her rent and additional income, according to the indictment.

According to court records, Grimmo has a criminal history of drug trafficking and driving while intoxicated in the Lewiston area. In 2013, she was arrested along for selling oxycodone out of a Mark Street home. Those charges against her are still pending.
