100 years ago, 1916
A man believed a former resident of New Auburn is at the Auburn police station, Wednesday afternoon, in an unconscious condition as a result of having lain out of doors in the storm from sometime Tuesday afternoon until shortly after 8 o’clock, Wednesday morning. It was about 8 o’clock, Wednesday morning when two very breathless and very white faced small boys burst into the store of George DeRosay, on the River road, Auburn, and exclaimed that a dead man was up in the pasture by Oak Hill cemetery. Naturally Mr. DeRosay became excited and at once telephoned the information to Deputy Marshal Mower who secured taxi and hastened to the scene.

Vacation schedules for the three mills of the Bates Manufacturing Company in Maine were announced today by H. L. Gosselin, assistant to the president. The Bates and the Edwards Divisions of the Company will close at 7 a.m. July 2 and reopen at 7 a.m. Monday, July 11. The Hill Division of the Company will close at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 2, and resume operations at 11 p m., Sunday, July 10. Gosselin said the Company will distribute more than $400,000 in vacation pay to its 3,000 employees in Lewiston and Augusta.

Don’t worry about parking, just show up. Lt. Richard Keene of the Auburn Police Department said Friday several businesses located near the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Minot Avenue have offered the use of their parking lots during today’s welcome home for members of the 619th Transportation Co. Parking will be available at Androscoggin Home Health, Diamond Equipment, Gould and Scammon Inc., and Northland Industrial Truck Co., he said, adding that parking for relatives is being reserved in the compound behind the center.
