CORINNA (AP) — The dog that attacked and killed a 7-year-old Maine boy earlier this month had attacked its previous owner’s other dog several times, according to a report by an animal control officer.
The report says the pit bull attacked the throat of Hunter Bragg of Bangor, who died at the scene of the mauling in Corinna on June 4. The report was obtained by the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1tjy9gO ) through a public records request.
The report, written by Corinna animal control officer Charles Gould, says the boy was in the yard with the chained dog at the time of the attack. The boy was at the home of Gary Merchant, where he was visiting his father.
Gould told the newspaper it was Merchant who told him the dog had attacked his daughter’s other dog, but he said that information is still being investigated. He said Merchant told him the dog had been living with him for two or three months.
The dog has since been euthanized.
The newspaper reports that Merchant did not return a call seeking comment.
Gould said there were several adults in the yard at the time of the attack, but they were possibly working on a deck. He said he wasn’t sure if they witnessed the attack.
The report said the dog’s Vermont license expired in December 2015, and that the dog is not licensed in Corinna.
Gould said he had no contact with the dog before the attack.
