PORTLAND (AP) — An initiative to rename a park in downtown Portland after a former city manager famous for overseeing Urban Renewal projects during the 1960s and 1970s is moving forward.
The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/28JQWe8 ) the city council will consider changing the name of Lobsterman Park to the “John E. Menario Plaza” on Monday. Portland’s Park Commission already voted 5-1 for the proposal.
Officials say a statue of a Maine lobsterman would remain at the corner of Temple and Middle streets despite the possible name change.
Current city manager Jon Jennings says renaming the park would be a good way of recognizing Menario’s impact on the city. Menario served as city manager from 1967 to 1976.
If approved, the park would become Portland’s fourth tribute to a former city manager.
