MECHANIC FALLS — Five departments responded to a brush fire that spread to over one-third of an acre along an ATV trail Monday on Pleasant Street.

Fire Chief Fred Sturtevant said the fire was called in just after 6 p.m. by an individual out four-wheeling on the trail. Mechanic Falls Fire and Rescue went to investigate and found a brush fire that had spread.

The fire itself was two and a half miles from the main road, and only ATVs could fit through, which is why so much mutual aid was needed. Four-wheelers with water pumps were driven to the scene instead of tankers.

“Luckily, the trail was acting as a natural fire break, which kept it somewhat contained,” Sturtevant said. “And the wind is down; that’s good.”

Mechanic Falls, Turner, Oxford, Otisfield and Norway responded to the fire, along with citizens who are part of the Bog Hooters Tri Town ATV Club.
