BUCKFIELD — Selectmen recessed their meeting Tuesday night to allow town employees a week to test drive three models of forklifts before deciding on a purchase, Town Manager Cindy Dunn said.

A forklift at the Buckfield-Sumner Transfer Station stopped working recently.

“Come to find out, the engine blew,” Dunn said Wednesday. Repairs are estimated to cost roughly $12,000. “Because of the age of it, it isn’t something you can just pull off the shelf and install. … We decided to investigate buying a new one.”

Selectmen recessed their meeting until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, “to get my report on the test drive and hopefully, maybe, make a decision on which one to purchase.”

In other news, selectmen decided to not appoint James Nelson to the Recreation Committee at this time. Board of Selectmen Chairman Warren Wright and Selectman Maida DeMers-Dobson voted against his appointment and Selectman Michael Iveson abstained because he did not have a chance to read over the application, according to Dunn.

A representative from the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce will be at the Tuesday, Sept. 6, selectmen meeting “to answer any questions the board might have regarding the benefit of joining the chamber,” Dunn said.

She also reminded selectmen and the public that Community Day is set for Monday, Sept. 5. Those wishing to participate in the parade will meet at Buckfield Junior Senior High School at 160 Morrill St. at 9 a.m. and the parade steps off at 10 a.m. Festivities on the field behind the Municipal Building at 34 Turner St. will follow the parade.

“There is a plea out there from the (Community Day) Committee, they are in need of volunteers to help set up, help break down, little things here and there,” Dunn said.
