MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Community Players announce the cast for the fall production of Garson Kanin’s “Born Yesterday.”
The production is directed by Ray Fletcher of Monmouth, local actor, director and thespian. He is being assisted by Linda Duarte of Lewiston and Cindy Dunham of Winthrop.
The story involves corrupt junk dealer Harry Brock (Cory King of Augusta), who arrives in Washington with his mistress, Billie Dawn (Rebecca Cole of Windham), and his alcoholic attorney, Ed Devery (Charlie Cole of Windham), in tow. He is in town to buy some lawmakers to help him take his shady business worldwide. To that end, Devery has arranged for a meeting with a morally loose legislator, Sen. Norval Hedges (David Marshall of Monmouth).
Dawn is a former chorus girl, blissfully ignorant of the ways of the world. She’s been with Brock for nine years and has allowed herself to be an unwitting partner in his shady business dealings. As she says, “I’m stupid and I like it.”
When Devery suggests to Brock that he marry Dawn in order to present a more respectable image to the Washington elite, he balks, instead deciding to find someone to give her some class by teaching her to “be smart.” Brock had just been interviewed by Paul Verrell (Henry Quintal of Augusta), a no-nonsense writer for The New Republic, and determines that he would be a perfect tutor. Verrell eagerly accepts the job, primarily because he’s attracted to Dawn. It turns out that she’s “got a yen” for him, too.
Things don’t turn out the way Brock wants them to, however. As Dawn begins to read books, visit museums and learn about history and politics from Verrell, she begins to realize what a crook Brock is and seeks to stop him in his tracks. As in all Pygmalian stories, what could possibly go wrong?
The cast is completed by a group of talented actors, including: Leslie Bascom of Monmouth as Mrs. Hedges; Henrik Strandskov of Brunswick as Eddie Brock; Jim Wright of Fayette as assistant manager; Brittany Bazinet of Greene as Helen; Chris Dumont as barber and Nancy Kenneally of Lewiston as manicurist.
The show will run Oct. 28 through Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at the historic Cumston Hall. Tickets are $14 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online through brownpaper tickets at http://mcp-bornyesterday.brownpapertickets.com/ or by calling 800-838-3006.
