MEXICO — Police Chief Roy Hodsdon is urging caution for anyone finding discarded hypodermic needles or other drug paraphernalia strewn around town.
“Leave them alone. Don’t touch them. Let us handle it,” he said.
In the past week, Hodsdon said his department received three calls from residents who found “needles and spoons” that had been used by drug users.
“They’re leaving their needles everywhere. It seems like we’re taking these calls daily. My concern is for the safety of citizens,” he said. “But we’re no different than any town.”
Over the weekend of Oct. 8-9, he said police responded to three drug overdoses, adding that Med-Care Ambulance staff used Narcan (naloxone) to save all three people.
“There’s really bad drugs coming from out of state that people are ingesting,” Hodsdon said. “It’s an epidemic; not getting any easier for us.”
He said that on Oct. 25, Mexico police officers will receive Narcan training administered by Med-Care.
Hodsdon said the Attorney General’s Office will be supplying the department with a supply of Narcan at no charge.
