LISBON — Fire officials and police are still looking into a 64 Summer St. fire Saturday that sent one woman to Maine Medical Center in Portland and injured several pets.
Amanda Wrobel was sent to the hospital with burns to 35 percent of her body, according to Deputy Fire Chief Bob Robitaille.
“She was home at the time, and she had burns to her hands, legs and part of her face,” Robitaille said. “But the main concern, the reason she’s headed to Maine Medical Center, is for possible respiratory damage. It’s the heat that’s the concern. Because of the facial burns, it’s a concern she may have inhaled hot gases.”
Fire Chief Sean Galipeau said multiple animals were killed in the fire. However, three dogs did survive. He credited one of the dogs with awakening Wrobel and alerting her to the fire.
“Anyone that knows her knows she’s a big pet lover,” Galipeau said. “They know she takes good care of her pets.”
Robitaille said the first call to firefighters was made at 3:39 p.m. The fire appeared to be under control by 4:15 p.m., with some crews still spraying water on hot spots.
Galipeau said it was too early to determine what caused the fire, but said it appears to have started in the kitchen.
The apartment had no working smoke detectors, Galipeau said.
Crews from Durham and Lewiston also responded to the fire and the State Fire Marshal was expected to be on site Monday, Galipeau said. Lisbon Police were also at the scene, photographing the fire.
