HANOVER — The cause of a fire that burned 1½ acres off Chamberlain Way on Monday is under investigation, Jay Bernard of the Maine Forest Service said.

“The biggest issue is getting water,” Rumford Fire Chief Bob Chase said.

The usual water sources, such as brooks and ponds, are dried up because of the drought, he said, so water was shuttled from Bethel hydrants.

The blaze was reported at 1:13 p.m. by someone at nearby Stony Brook Recreation & Campground off Route 2. Departments from Newry, Mexico, Rumford, Andover, Greenwood and Bethel helped extinguish the flames.

There was no estimate of damage to the property, which is owned by a Bethel resident.
