OXFORD — One day after Fire Chief Wayne Jones resigned from the department, the town has found a replacement.
An interim replacement, anyway.
Deputy Chief David Heidrich will fill in as head of the department while a search for a permanent chief gets underway.
Heidrich confirmed the news Wednesday night.
“I’m going to be working with the guys and trying to get things back on track,” he said. “We’re going to move forward. We’re here for the public.”
The move was made on the heels of a tumultuous showdown between the Fire Department and Jones. At the department’s monthly meeting Monday night, all of the ranking officers and an undisclosed number of others issued a two-page “Letter of No Confidence” to Jones, requesting his instant resignation.
“Since your arrival, you have demonstrated a lack of local knowledge and demonstrated poor communication skills with the officers and members of this department,” according to the letter. “Chief Jones, you have failed to demonstrate the ability to work within a call company department.”
On Tuesday evening, Jones resigned in a one-sentence email sent out to all department members. He had served as chief since June 2015 after coming to Oxford from the Westbrook Fire Department.
